JUNIOR CHOIR - faqs

What is the Church choir?
The church choir is made up of children and adults from the local area. The choir exists to lead the musical worship of the church on Sundays.

Who runs it?
The church choir is run by Daniel Eaton, who is the organist at the church, and is also a junior school teacher.

How old do I have to be?
We would ask that you are at least 7 years old; there is no upper age limit!

Are there any children already in the choir?
Yes. We currently have seven children in the choir, the youngest being 8 and the oldest being 13. We also have an adult choir, but their ages are strictly confidential!

How often do they meet?
The church choir meets every Wednesday (except for holiday time) for one hour between 7pm and 8 pm for a choir practice. The choir also meets ever Sunday morening at 10 am for the weekly act of worship. This normally lasts about an hour.

What's the commitment?
We would ask you to try and attend as many practices and services as possible but we do understand that there are times when you will not be able to make it.

What would I have to wear?
You will be provided with a cassock when you join. All that we ask  you to wear are a pair of sensible shoes for the services!

Is it just singing?
The choir primarily exists to sing but there are also other activities as well. Every term the choir go on an outing (previous outings have included bowling, ice-skating and swimming) on one Saturday in the term. These outings are always great fun and allow the choristers to get to know each other in a totally different environment. There are also other activities, such as the Christmas party and visits to concerts, and these events are always notied in the diary well in advance.

Would we get paid?
Yes! Every chorister gets paid. The amount you would receive would depend on how often you have attended during the term and how long you have been singing in the choir. The choristers are paid at the end of every term.

Are there holidays?
Yes! The choir holidays are roughly the same as the school holidays except that the choir keeps going until Christmas day and Easter day. There is always a half-term break in the middle of each term and a good couple of weeks after Christmas and Easter. There is also a long summer holiday. You may , of course attend if you wish in the holidays (and still be paid!) but there is no expectation for you to do this.

Will I know what is going on in advance?
Yes. Every term you will receive a choir diary telling you and your parents exactly what is happening for the rest of the term.

Is it fun?

We certainly hope so! Although being in the choir can be quite hard work it is a great opportunity fo ranyone who is interested in singing. It is also a great way to make new friends.

Will I learn anything from it?
Yes. Every chorister follows the Royal School of Church Music 'Voice for Life' scheme which will teach you an enormous amount about music and singing.
